About Samaritans
Samaritans is a confidential emotional support service for anyone in the UK and Ireland. The service is available 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.
The service is manned by volunteers who answer phone calls, emails and letters and provide face to face support.
Who needs Samaritans?
One in ten teenagers is affected by depression and often it can be difficult to find someone independent to talk to or to ask for emotional support. Samaritans provide this support for 4.6 million people a year.
One in four of us knows someone personally who has died by suicide, and two people self-harm every hour in the UK. Samaritans’ vision is for a society where fewer people die by suicide. Please help us turn that into a reality.
Ealing, Hammersmith & Hounslow Samaritans alone takes over 25,000 calls a year, day and night. Each branch is entirely staffed by volunteers (the only person who gets paid is the cleaner) - and Ealing has 120 registered volunteers dealing with phonecalls, emails and face-to-face visitors (as well as training, education and outreach, fundraising, caller care, volunteer recruitment, publicity and day-to-day management).
